Altena, situated in the Märkischer Kreis district, is a town defined by its dramatic topography and deep industrial roots. Perched high on a rocky spur above the Lenne River is Castle Altena, arguably the town's most famous landmark. In 1912, it became the birthplace of the worldwide youth hostel movement when Richard Schirrmann opened the first permanent hostel within its walls. Down in the valley, Altena established itself as a global leader in the wire industry, earning the nickname 'the town of wire drawers.' The German Wire Museum, located just below the castle, provides an extensive look at how wire has shaped human civilization. Due to its location in a narrow valley, the town features dense historical architecture and a unique multimedia elevator that transports visitors from the town center through the mountain directly to the castle. Today, Altena is a key site on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Its combination of medieval grandeur, technical history, and scenic hiking trails in the surrounding Sauerland hills makes it a unique destination for both history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.
