The so-called Kolping City of Kerpen in the Rhein-Erft district is a destination of fascinating contrasts. The town became globally famous as the home of record-breaking world champion Michael Schumacher; motorsport fans still make pilgrimages to the legendary outdoor kart track where his racing career once began. However, Kerpen has much more to offer than fast engines. Hidden within the municipal area are magnificent noble residences, such as the imposing moated Loersfeld Castle with its beautiful park, and the scenic Türnich Castle, which is surrounded by a romantic French garden. Nature lovers are drawn to the Marienfeld recreation area, a renatured former open-cast mining site that has transformed into a species-rich nature reserve, perfectly suited for long walks or cycling tours. The Papal Hill (Papsthügel), constructed for the 2005 World Youth Day, is also located within this expansive landscape. In the historic center of Kerpen, old churches and monuments dedicated to the social reformer Adolph Kolping invite visitors on a quiet journey of discovery through Rhenish history.
