Elsdorf is located in the Rhein-Erft district west of Cologne, in the midst of the fertile Jülicher Börde plain. The town is globally recognized for its ties to the sugar industry; the Pfeifer & Langen company was founded here in 1870 and remains one of Europe's leading sugar producers today. A massive factor in the region's geography and social fabric is the neighboring Hambach open-cast mine, Germany's largest lignite mine. From the 'Terra Nova' observation deck, visitors can grasp the gigantic scale of the excavation. Despite its industrial character, Elsdorf retains rural charm in its outlying districts and is actively managing the structural transition following the planned coal phase-out. Historic highlights include old manor houses and the Catholic parish church of St. Dionysius. The town is well-connected to the regional transport network between Cologne and Aachen.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
