Hamminkeln is a spacious town in the Lower Rhine region, known for its scenic rural beauty and historic landmarks. Formed through a merger of seven villages in 1975, it covers an extensive area of nearly 165 square kilometers, much of which is preserved as open countryside or protected nature areas. The town is situated at the transition between the Lower Rhine plain and the rolling hills of the Hohe Mark Nature Park. One of its architectural highlights is Ringenberg Castle, a baroque water castle that now serves as a creative hub for artists. The village of Marienthal is another cultural gem, famous for its historic monastery and artistic community. Economically, Hamminkeln is home to several specialized industries, including well-known producers of fruit juices and traditional spirits. The town benefits from its location along the A3 motorway, providing excellent connections to both the Ruhr area and the Netherlands. Visitors are often drawn to its peaceful atmosphere, extensive cycling paths, and the natural diversity of the Diersfordt Forest, which is home to significant wildlife populations.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
