Dörenther Klippen (Germany)

Weather…

The Dörenther Klippen are a striking sandstone formation approximately four kilometers long located in the Teutoburg Forest near Ibbenbüren, North Rhine-Westphalia. Geologically, they consist of Osning sandstone deposited during the Lower Cretaceous period, roughly 120 million years ago, at the margins of a sea. Subsequent mountain-building processes tilted the rock layers steeply, while weathering sculpted them into bizarre rock shapes. The most famous formation is the 'Hockendes Weib' (Crouching Woman), a rock figure surrounded by a tragic legend of a mother who saved her children from an approaching flood and was turned to stone. The cliffs rise up to 40 meters above the surrounding terrain, providing panoramic views across the Münsterland region. Today, the area is designated as a nature reserve, hosting specialized flora like ferns and mosses that thrive in the damp rock crevices. Furthermore, the region is a popular destination for rock climbers and hikers on the Hermannsweg trail.
