Located among the rolling hills of the idyllic Tollense Valley, the small town of Altentreptow is a quiet find in the heart of Western Pomerania. The medieval heritage of the town is beautifully preserved and best experienced by tracing the remnants of its old fortifications. The two surviving brick city gates, the imposing Brandenburger Tor and the distinctive Muhlentor, serve as proud reminders of its history and make for excellent photographic backdrops. Dominating the town center is St. Peter Church (St.-Petri-Kirche), a striking example of Northern German brick Gothic architecture that invites visitors to pause and reflect beneath its vaulted ceilings. However, the most famous attraction in Altentreptow is a geological wonder located on the Klosterberg: the Großer Stein. Brought here from Scandinavia by massive glaciers thousands of years ago, it is one of the largest glacial erratic boulders on the German mainland. Surrounded by untouched river landscapes, the town also provides a quiet base for extensive cycling and kayaking tours.
