Situated in the heart of the Oldenburger Münsterland, Vechta is an animated town whose history is deeply interwoven with horse breeding and agricultural traditions. The municipality is internationally renowned for the Oldenburger horse breed, with several prestigious equestrian breeding centers located right here. Once a year in August, the town transforms into a massive festival ground during the Stoppelmarkt; this highly traditional funfair has existed since 1298 and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors. Those interested in historical defensive architecture should explore the Castrum Vechtense, a faithful reconstruction of a medieval castle fortress set within the citadel park. Furthermore, the museum located in the historical Zeughaus provides in-depth information on the local penal history and regional culture. The expansive surrounding landscape, characterized by moorlands such as the Großes Moor, has nature lovers fantastic routes for bird watching and tranquil hikes away from the crowds.
