Tucked away in the densely wooded Dammer Berge hills and just a few kilometers from Lake Dümmer, Damme is a characterful small town in the southern Oldenburger Münsterland region. This officially recognized resort town stands out due to its hilly landscape, which is rather unusual for Northern Germany and provides a well-suited setting for extensive hiking and mountain biking tours. Dominating the town center is the impressive Catholic parish church of St. Viktor, whose massive Romanesque tower is often referred to as the "Damme Cathedral" and shapes the local skyline. Historically, Damme is closely tied to iron ore mining, a heritage visitors can still explore at the City Museum and the striking Bergsee, a flooded former open-pit mine. Beyond the region, however, the town is most famous for the "Dammer Carneval", one of the largest street carnivals in Northern Germany. Its unique feature is the date: by tradition, the massive celebration with colorful floats and thousands of costumed revelers takes place a full week before the usual Rose Monday parades. After an active day outdoors, the regional cuisine tempts visitors with hearty Westphalian-Lower Saxon dishes such as pumpernickel bread, Mettwurst sausages, and a rich kale stew.
