Twistringen is located about 30 kilometers southwest of Bremen in the Diepholz district. The town gained international fame for its straw processing, which was the most important branch of the economy in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Up to 30 factories produced straw hats, mats, and bottle sleeves for the global market. The Museum of Straw Processing today documents this unique industrial history. Twistringen is also a Catholic island in a predominantly Protestant region, which is demonstrated by the imposing neo-Gothic St. Anna Church, visible from far across the surrounding countryside. Today, the town is a modern service and trade center with good rail connections to the Hanseatic cities. Its location on the edge of the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park gives residents and visitors access to extensive heath and forest landscapes.
