Located in the heart of the Oldenburger Münsterland, Dinklage is a small town renowned for its impressive historical structures and dense forests. The undisputed highlight of the town is the Dinklage Moated Castle, the largest medieval moated castle in the Weser-Ems region. Idyllically set within a vast forest, the 15th-century complex is now home to a Benedictine convent. The publicly accessible areas, the surrounding moats, and the pretty castle chapel naturally draw those interested in architecture and history. The town is also famous as the birthplace of the Blessed Clemens August Graf von Galen, known as the "Lion of Münster", who was born here in 1878. For nature lovers, the surrounding 100-hectare Burgwald (castle forest) provides a magnificent area for extensive walks, where ancient oak and beech trees provide ample shade, and a wildlife enclosure is particularly popular with families. In the town center, pleasant half-timbered and clinker-brick houses stand side by side, telling the story of the town's traditional craft and merchant history. Following the trail of mill culture, cyclists can explore the region's wind and watermills along the Lower Saxon Mill Route, refueling in the evening with hearty pumpernickel bread and aromatic local ham.
