💡 Tips
- The ferry schedule to Spiekeroog is highly dependent on the tides. Check the timetable carefully in advance to avoid long waits.
- Take a ride on Germany's only horse-drawn railway, connecting the former train station to the island's west end, a nostalgic and unique experience.
- Spiekeroog is car-free. The main mode of transport is the bicycle, but most places in the welcoming island village are easily reachable on foot.
- Climb one of the higher dunes on the designated paths. From there, you'll get a dramatic panoramic view over the island, the salt marshes, and the Wadden Sea.
- Be sure to join a guided mudflat hike (Wattwanderung). It's only safe to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site with an experienced guide, and you'll learn a lot about this unique ecosystem.
🍽 Food
Try products made from the bustling orange sea buckthorn berry, such as cake, liqueur, or hot juice. You'll find them in many cafés and small shops in the village.
A must-have on the North Sea coast. Get a roll with matjes herring or North Sea shrimp from one of the stalls near the harbour for an authentic taste of the sea.
Look for dishes featuring salt marsh lamb in the traditional restaurants. The meat is especially tender and flavourful from the sheep grazing on salty marsh grasses.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The small shops in the village centre offer a nice selection of handmade goods, maritime decorations, and clothing with island motifs.
With a bit of luck, you can find amber on the beach yourself after a storm. Alternatively, you can buy beautiful amber jewellery in some of the shops.
The further east you walk along the beach, the quieter and more deserted it becomes. Enjoy the vastness and the pure North Sea air.
Visit the historic, thatched-roof church, one of the oldest on the East Frisian Islands. The surrounding cemetery with its 'talking' gravestones radiates a special peace.
Follow the wooden boardwalks and paths through the protected dune landscape. It's the excellent place to admire the island's unique flora and enjoy the silence.
Water temperature…
Spiekeroog is considered the most original of the East Frisian islands. The heritage-protected village, with its centuries-old Frisian houses and narrow lanes, radiates incomparable tranquility. Since no cars and not even bicycles for tourists are allowed, slowness is celebrated here. Unique is the horse-drawn railway, the only one of its kind in Germany, which operates in summer between the village and the west beach. The 15-kilometer white sandy beach invites long walks and relaxing in wicker beach chairs. The island's interior is characterized by small woods and dense hedges, earning Spiekeroog the nickname 'Green Island'. Culinary offerings are dominated by cozy tea rooms and restaurants serving regional specialties like lamb roast. For families, the 'Trockendock' provides great indoor play options. The island is also a certified international Dark Sky Park, offering spectacular views of the Milky Way at night.
