💡 Tips
- Baltrum has no street names. The houses are simply numbered. It's a characterful quirk that makes finding your way a small adventure at first.
- The island is tiny, everything is easily reachable on foot. Bicycles are uncommon and mostly unnecessary for guests.
- The ferry schedule is strictly tide-dependent and changes daily. Check the departure times for your arrival and departure carefully and plan for buffer time.
- Listen for the 'Inselglocke' (island bell). It chimes not just for the time, but also for important events or to greet the arriving ferry.
- Pack light. Your luggage is often transported separately by small carts, as you will be walking from the harbour to your accommodation.
🍽 Food
A true island specialty. Try this refreshing dessert made from curdled milk served with a sweet and sour sea buckthorn sauce in one of the traditional restaurants.
Buy freshly cooked North Sea shrimp directly from a fisherman and peel them yourself. It's a meditative and rewarding activity, rewarded with an incomparably fresh taste.
Treat yourself at a café to a slice of this hearty but delicious cake made of puff pastry, plum jam and lots of whipped cream.

Take a walk to the natural eastern end of the island. Here you will find peace, vast salt marshes and you can watch birds undisturbed.

Baltrum is the smallest and most tranquil of the East Frisian islands, earning it the affectionate nickname 'Sleeping Beauty of the North Sea.' On an area of just 6.5 square kilometers, visitors find everything they need for a decelerated holiday. Since the island is car-free and all distances are short, Baltrum is excellent to explore on foot. The village is divided into the West Village and the East Village, with the fine bathing beach located in the west. A highlight for nature lovers is the 'Gezeitenpfad' (Tide Path), an educational trail explaining the flora and fauna of the Wadden Sea. The historic island church from the 19th century is a sanctuary of peace. Despite its small size, Baltrum provides a good selection of hotels, vacation rentals, and cozy restaurants where you can end the day with a sea view. The island is particularly popular with regular guests who appreciate the familial atmosphere and the complete absence of any hustle and bustle.
