💡 Tips
- Heligoland is a duty-free zone. Take the opportunity to buy alcohol, perfume, and tobacco at lower prices, but be aware of the customs allowances when returning to the mainland.
- The island consists of the 'Unterland' (Lower Land) by the harbour and the 'Oberland' (Upper Land) on the rock plateau. An elevator and stairs connect the two parts, the elevator is especially helpful when arriving and leaving with luggage.
- Be sure to take a walk along the cliff-edge path (Klippenrandweg) in the Oberland. From here, you have the best chance of spotting the famous gannets and guillemots at their breeding sites.
- The island is car-free. Everything is easily accessible on foot. For transporting heavy luggage from the harbour to your accommodation, there are luggage services available.
- Plan your visit to the neighbouring island 'Düne' (Dune) carefully. The small ferry runs regularly, but services can be suspended during rough seas. That's where you'll find the seals and the bathing beaches.
🍽 Food
You must try the claws of the brown crab, a famous local delicacy. They are typically served cold with bread and various dips. Look for restaurants by the harbour that offer fresh seafood.
Enjoy fish straight from the cutter. Many restaurants, especially in the Unterland, offer the catch of the day, such as plaice or cod, prepared simply to highlight its freshness.
Warm up on a cool day with a traditional Eiergrog. This hot drink made from rum, egg liqueur, and hot water is a classic on the North Sea coast and is available in many cafés and bars.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The main shopping street in the Unterland is lined with shops offering a wide selection of duty-free spirits, wines, and perfumes at attractive prices. It's worth comparing the features.
Away from the liquor stores, you can also find small shops selling island-inspired items, such as clothing with Heligoland motifs or maritime decorative items.
Take the short ferry ride to the neighbouring island of Düne. Here you can walk along the vast sandy beaches, enjoy the tranquility, and observe the seal and grey seal colonies from a respectful distance.
While the area around the Lange Anna rock stack is often busy, the northern and eastern parts of the cliff-edge path are quieter. Go early in the morning or late in the evening to enjoy the views in peace.
A contemplative and quiet spot in the Oberland. This small cemetery commemorates the sailors lost at sea whose bodies were washed ashore on Heligoland.
Water temperature…
Helgoland is located about 70 kilometers from the mainland in the middle of the North Sea and is Germany's only deep-sea island. The striking red sandstone defines its appearance, with the 47-meter-high rock needle 'Lange Anna' in the northwest being its most famous landmark. The island is divided into the Lower Land, Middle Land, and Upper Land, connected by stairs or an elevator. A cliff-edge path circles the Upper Land, offering spectacular views of the sea and the thousands of northern gannets that nest here. For swimming, visitors take a short ferry to the neighboring 'Düne' island, where they often share the beach with grey seals and common seals. Helgoland is also known as a duty-free shopping paradise, attracting many day-trippers. A culinary must-try is 'Helgoländer Knieper' (crab claws). The mild deep-sea climate makes the island a good retreat for allergy sufferers. Access is provided by fast catamarans from Hamburg or Cuxhaven, or by classic seaside resort ships.
