💡 Tips

  • Check the forecast: In the Ording and Böhl districts, you can park directly on the sandy beach from spring to autumn, but this is not possible during storm surge warnings.
  • The distances are long! It can be a 20-minute walk from the dike or car park to the water's edge. Pack accordingly.
  • The guest card is worth the money: it allows free use of the local buses, which is very useful given the long distances between the different parts of town.
  • A windbreak is a good investment on 9 out of 10 days. The wind on the North Sea coast can be chilly even on sunny days.
  • Visit the famous pile-dwelling restaurants for a coffee or a meal, but it's best to go outside the midday rush hour to enjoy the view in peace.

🍽 Food

🍽
Shrimp Roll (Krabbenbrötchen)

A must-try on the North Sea coast. Enjoy a roll with fresh North Sea shrimp at one of the pile-dwelling restaurants right on the beach.

🍽
Salt Marsh Lamb

The meat from lambs that graze on the salty meadows of the Eiderstedt peninsula is a special delicacy. Look for it on the menus of regional inns.

🍽
Pharisäer

A strong coffee with rum and a whipped cream top. The rule is: don't stir! It's wonderfully warming on a windy day.

St. Peter-Ording, situated at the western tip of the Eiderstedt peninsula, is the only German seaside resort with its own sulfur spring. Its most iconic feature is the vast sandy beach, approximately twelve kilometers long and up to two kilometers wide, offering an endless horizon during low tide. The beach is famous for its historic pile dwellings, some rising seven meters high, housing restaurants and lifeguard stations to stay above the North Sea tides. The town consists of four districts, ranging from a quiet traditional village to a lively center with the modern 'Dünen-Therme' spa. Constant westerly winds make it a premier destination for kite surfing and beach sailing, often hosting world-class competitions. Nature lovers can explore the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Guided mudflat hikes provide a close-up look at the diverse marine life. Local culinary highlights include fresh North Sea shrimp and salt-marsh lamb. The resort is easily accessible by train via Husum or by car via the A23 motorway.
