Beerfelden is located in the heart of the Odenwald mountains in southern Hesse and has served as the administrative center of the newly formed town of Oberzent since 2018. Perched on a high plateau at an elevation of over 400 meters, it was historically the highest town in the Odenwald. Its most famous and haunting landmark is the Beerfelden Gallows, a three-pillared stone structure built in 1597, which stands as the most complete medieval execution site in Germany. Another architectural highlight is the Twelve-Spout Fountain (Zwölfröhrenbrunnen), which captures the source of the Mümling river and was once vital for the town's water supply. Beerfelden is home to a long tradition of livestock trading, celebrated annually at the Beerfelden Horse and Cattle Market, the largest folk festival in the Odenwald region. For outdoor enthusiasts, the town gives a popular mountain bike park and ski slopes during the winter months. The surrounding landscape, characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands, provides extensive trails for hikers looking to experience the natural beauty of the Hessian highlands.
