Schotten is the bustling tourist hub of the diverse Vogelsberg region and a paradise for nature lovers and active holidaymakers. Set within Europe's largest contiguous volcanic area, the town gives a fascinating glimpse into the Earth's geological history. The interactive Vulkaneum museum in the town centre brings the region's volcanic past to life through state-of-the-art exhibitions. An architectural highlight of the old town is the Gothic Liebfrauenkirche, which houses a highly significant 14th-century Marian winged altar. Around the market square, lovingly maintained half-timbered houses give the town a wonderfully easy on the eye character. Just a few kilometres outside the centre lies the Niddastausee reservoir, a popular local recreation area offering convenient conditions for sailing, windsurfing, fishing, or relaxing walks along the shore. For motorsport enthusiasts, Schotten is famous for the historic Schottenring, a former street racing circuit whose legacy is celebrated today with classic Grand Prix events. In winter, the nearby Hoherodskopf mountain transforms into a lively winter sports centre with cross-country ski trails, while in summer it serves as a starting point for extensive hikes and mountain biking tours.
