Hattersheim am Main is centrally located in the Main-Taunus district, strategically positioned between Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, and Mainz. During the early 20th century, this city of 28,000 residents was a significant industrial hub, defined by the large Sarotti chocolate factory and a major cellulose plant. Today, the urban landscape focuses on repurposed industrial heritage sites and extensive green spaces. A major focal point is the Rosarium, a large park featuring over 6,000 rose plants, which serves as a key node in the Regionalpark RheinMain network. The renaturalized banks of the Schwarzbach stream, which flows through the town before joining the Main river, provide miles of dedicated cycling and walking paths. In the Okriftel district, the old paper mill stands as a testament to the industrial past, while the local riverbank featuring an historic ferry acts as a popular summer gathering spot. The historic Hattersheim waterworks, constructed in 1905 to supply drinking water to parts of Frankfurt, remains a striking example of Art Nouveau industrial architecture with its elaborate brick facade.
