Kelkheim (Taunus) is a town in the Main-Taunus district of Hesse, uniquely positioned on the southern slopes of the Taunus mountains. The city's identity is deeply rooted in the woodworking industry; in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the primary supplier of high-end furniture to the growing city of Frankfurt, earning it the nickname 'Furniture Town.' This heritage is celebrated today at the local Furniture Museum. Geographically, Kelkheim gives a high standard of living with its hillside locations providing panoramic views of the Frankfurt skyline. The town includes several districts, such as Fischbach and the high-altitude Eppenhain, which is a popular starting point for Taunus hikers. The historic Rettershof estate, formerly a monastery founded in 1146, is a key cultural landmark. Modern Kelkheim is a prosperous community with a mix of service industries and specialized manufacturing, benefiting significantly from its integration into the Frankfurt metropolitan area while preserving its green belts and forested surroundings.
