Perched high above the pretty Eder valley, Battenberg is a tranquil small town whose name carries unexpected global historical weight. It is the ancestral home of the noble House of Battenberg, whose descendants later Anglicized their name to Mountbatten upon moving to Great Britain, a family intrinsically linked to the modern British Royal Family. The historic center of the town clings to the steep slopes of the castle hill. A prominent landmark is the massive keep of the ruined Kellerburg fortress; those who climb its worn stone steps are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views over the deep green Eder valley and the distant Rothaargebirge mountains. Another architectural centerpiece is the Neuburg, an elegant baroque hunting lodge built in the early 18th century by the Landgraves of Hesse, which now serves as the town hall and hosts cultural events in its courtyard. The old market square is lined with beautifully preserved half-timbered (Fachwerk) houses that showcase traditional regional craftsmanship. Battenberg also serves as an excellent basecamp for nature lovers. The Ederauen cycle path and numerous hiking trails lead directly into pristine forests, while the Eder river itself is highly popular for canoeing and fishing in the summer months.
