💡 Tips
- Explore the completely preserved city walls during an early morning walk when there are no tourists on the streets yet.
- Leave your car in the large, free parking lots outside the city gates, as the alleys in the center are extremely narrow.
- Join the night watchman in the evening; his tour through the illuminated old town is free and very informative.
- Make sure to wear flat and comfortable shoes, as the historic cobblestones can be very uneven.
🍽 Food
Try the crispy pork shoulder with dumplings in one of the traditional Franconian inns in the old town.
Buy this famous crumbly pastry, which looks like a snowball, in the local pastry shops.
Enjoy spicy bratwursts on a bed of sauerkraut in the cozy beer gardens or at butcher shops in the center.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Browse the small boutiques for hand-painted ceramics and Franconian wooden toys.
Bring home a bottle of regional wine in the typical bulbous bottle (Bocksbeutel) from a wine shop.
Relax on the green banks of the Wörnitz river, right outside the medieval city walls.
Enjoy the idyllic silence at this small lake, in which the old towers of the city are reflected.

Dinkelsbühl is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany and a prominent highlight along the Romantic Road in Middle Franconia. The historic center is enclosed by a completely intact town wall, which, with its 16 towers and four magnificent gates, forms an impressive fortification complex. At the heart of the old town stands St. George's Minster, one of the most significant late Gothic hall churches in southern Germany, featuring a remarkably intricate vaulted ceiling. A stroll through the scenic, cobblestone streets immediately reveals rows of beautifully maintained patrician houses. The most famous among them is the Deutsches Haus, celebrated for its elaborately decorated Renaissance half-timbered facade. A major highlight of the local calendar is the historical "Kinderzeche" festival in July, a reenactment that commemorates the saving of the town from destruction by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. In the evenings, the traditional night watchman invites visitors for atmospheric walking tours, while cozy local taverns serve up hearty Franconian specialties like Schäufele paired with excellent regional beers.
