Every three years in June, barrel organ and carousel organ players from around the world transform the city center of the organ-building town of Waldkirch into a world of sound with large organs and hundreds of hand-crank organs.
The Swabian-Alemannic carnival is a stronghold in Waldkirch; the highlight is the parades in February featuring the typical Kläpperle and the Bajass figure.
Positioned at the entrance to the Elz valley in the central Black Forest, Waldkirch is widely celebrated as a historic center for organ building. This artisanal tradition, spanning over two centuries, is comprehensively documented in the Elztal Museum, which displays an impressive working collection of mechanical musical instruments, barrel organs, and massive fairground organs. Rising above the historic town center, which is characterized by traditional burgher houses and inviting market squares, are the ruins of Kastelburg Castle. The steep hike up to the fortress is rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across the valley. Another major attraction right on the edge of the town is the nature adventure park featuring the Black Forest Treetop Walk. This suspended wooden pathway allows visitors to walk through the forest canopy at heights of up to 23 meters, making it a major draw for families. The heavily forested slopes of the local Kandel mountain, which peaks at over 1,200 meters, provide challenging routes for hikers and mountain bikers, as well as prime launch sites for paragliders. The local culinary scene is heavily influenced by hearty Baden specialties and wines sourced from the nearby Breisgau vineyards.
