Emmendingen is the capital of the Emmendingen district in southwestern Germany, located in the scenic Breisgau region between the Black Forest and the Rhine valley. The town's skyline is dominated by the majestic Hochburg, one of the largest and most significant castle ruins in the state of Baden-Württemberg, which served as a fortress for the Margraves of Baden for centuries. The town center features a well-preserved Old Town with the Margravial Palace and numerous half-timbered houses. Emmendingen holds a special place in German literary history as the residence of Cornelia Schlosser, the sister of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose former home now houses a museum. Geographically, the town is split by the Elz river, contributing to its lush green surroundings. Today, Emmendingen is a vital economic center for the region, known for its high-tech industries, specialized crafts, and as a starting point for exploring the nearby vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl and the hiking trails of the Black Forest foothills.
