Located in the northwestern part of the Stuttgart region, Vaihingen an der Enz is frequently characterized as a town of vineyards and forests. The local skyline is firmly defined by Kaltenstein Castle, which sits prominently on a rocky spur above the valley and has a history reaching back to the 11th century. Positioned at the base of the castle hill is the historic old town, centered around a market square that features a magnificent town hall built in 1720, surrounded by narrow streets of classic half-timbered houses. The position of the town directly on the Enz river makes it a prime launching point for canoe trips and extended cycling journeys along the scenic Enz Valley Cycle Path. Viticulture forms a core pillar of local identity, particularly the cultivation of Trollinger and Lemberger grape varieties on the steep, sunlit terraced hills encompassing the town. Visitors can sample these regional wines directly from the winemakers at seasonal pop-up taverns known locally as Besenwirtschaften. Adding depth to the historical narrative of the town, a concentration camp memorial site in the Glattbach district addresses the darker chapters of the mid-20th century, serving as a critical site for historical education.
