Rottenburg am Neckar is a historic city in the district of Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, boasting nearly 2,000 years of continuous settlement. Originally a significant Roman town known as Sumelocenna, it today features a dedicated Roman Museum that displays extensive archaeological finds, including ancient heating systems and mosaics. Since 1821, Rottenburg has served as the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, giving the city its distinctive ecclesiastical character dominated by the St. Martin's Cathedral. The medieval old town is tucked away along the banks of the Neckar river, characterized by winding alleys and historic timber-framed houses. The city is also a major center for the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet, a traditional carnival where thousands of masked figures parade through the streets every February. Economically, the city is a hub for regional administration and education, particularly noted for its University of Applied Forest Sciences. Its location in the scenic Neckar Valley makes it a popular destination for cyclists and hikers exploring southwest Germany.
