Taleh is a city of profound historical significance in the Sool region of northern Somalia, best known as the former capital of the Dervish State. Founded by Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan in the early 20th century, it was the administrative and military nerve center of the resistance against colonial rule. The city is home to the Silsilad complex, a vast array of stone fortresses, mosques, and palaces that once housed thousands of Dervish followers. Taleh holds a unique place in military history as the site of the first aerial bombardment in Sub-Saharan Africa, carried out by the British Royal Air Force in 1920 to bring an end to the Dervish insurgency. Despite the destruction caused by the bombings, many of the structures remain standing today as powerful symbols of Somali nationalism and architectural heritage. Modern Taleh serves as the administrative capital of the Taleh District, while its ruins remain a point of national pride and cultural study.
