Historic Port of Cap Lopez (Gabon)

Weather…

The historic port of Cap Lopez, located on Mandji Island, was for centuries one of the most significant transshipment points for the slave trade on the West African coast. Its geographical position at the southernmost point of the Bight of Biafra provided ships with natural shelter, making it a preferred stop for European traders from Portugal, the Netherlands, and Britain. The local Orungu Kingdom controlled access to the port and acted as a powerful intermediary in trade between the hinterland and overseas powers. It is estimated that thousands of people were shipped from here to the Americas before the trade ceased in the mid-19th century due to international pressure and French naval blockades. In the 20th century, the region underwent a fundamental transformation following the discovery of oil deposits. Today, a historic lighthouse built in 1911 according to designs from Gustave Eiffel's office recalls the maritime importance of this location, while memorials document the tragic history of human trafficking.
