Cap Lopez is the westernmost point of Gabon, located on Mandji Island near the major port city of Port-Gentil. It serves as the geographic dividing point between the Gulf of Guinea and the South Atlantic Ocean. Historically, it was discovered in 1474 by the Portuguese explorer Lopo Gonçalves, after whom it is named. For centuries, the cape was a strategic landmark for the transatlantic slave trade and later for the export of tropical timber. In the modern era, Cap Lopez is best known for its massive oil terminal, which handles the majority of Gabon's crude oil exports. A prominent landmark is the iron lighthouse built in 1911, which bears architectural similarities to the works of Gustave Eiffel. Despite the heavy industrial presence, the surrounding waters remain rich in marine life, and the area is a prime spot for observing humpback whales during their annual migration along the coast.

Getting there

This westernmost point of Gabon is typically accessed by road from the nearby economic hub of Port-Gentil, located on the island of Mandji. The route involves driving through some industrial areas before finally reaching the much more natural coastal cape.

Best season

The dry season, from June to September, is generally the best time to visit, as the intense tropical humidity is lower and dirt roads are considerably drier. During this period, visitors also have a better chance of spotting whales migrating past the coast.

The landscape consists mostly of flat, sandy beaches and dense coastal vegetation where the wide Ogooué River mouth finally meets the Atlantic Ocean. The ground is largely soft sand and extensive tidal flats, which can change rapidly with incoming tides.

Lightweight, breathable tropical clothing and strong, reliable sun protection are absolutely essential for the hot equatorial climate of Gabon. Bring comfortable sandals for walking on the sand, and consider packing binoculars for birdwatching and marine life.

Parking is typically informal and can be easily found near the local sandy beaches or around the old, historic lighthouse structure situated at the cape. It is strongly advisable to leave vehicles only on firm ground to avoid getting stuck in the soft coastal sand.
