Opunohu Valley Nature Area on Moorea is a 20 km² valley known for its lush vegetation and archaeological sites. Located in the center of the island, it contains several marae (traditional Polynesian ceremonial platforms). Vegetation includes dense rainforests with breadfruit trees, coconut palms, and tropical flowering plants. The valley hosts diverse birdlife including the Moorea fruit dove (Ptilinopus purpuratus) and the silvereye. The Opunohu River flows through, forming several waterfalls. The protected area was established in 1995 to preserve cultural and natural heritage. Elevation ranges from sea level to 800 meters. Getting there
The Opunohu Valley Nature Area is broadly accessible via the well-paved road branching off from Opunohu Bay, which runs deep into the agricultural and historical heart of Moorea.
Best season
The lush valley is welcoming year-round, but the period between May and October provides the most comfortable temperatures and significantly lower humidity for exploring the extensive ancient ruins.
Terrain & paths
Visitors will find a network of generally flat, clearly marked dirt trails weaving through dense forests, pineapple plantations, and well-maintained Polynesian stone temples known as marae.
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are perfectly adequate for the main historical trails. However, strong mosquito repellent and an umbrella or light rain jacket are highly recommended in this tropical basin.
Parking
Excellent, well-marked parking facilities are provided near the primary archaeological sites and at the agricultural college, making it remarkably convenient for rental cars and scooter drivers.
Safety
This is a very secure and popular area with minimal natural hazards. Just be cautious of agricultural vehicles operating on the narrow paved roads and stay on the trails to preserve historical stones.
Time needed
Exploring the serene nature area, examining the ancient marae structures, and perhaps visiting the agricultural school takes a leisurely two to three hours for most independent visitors.
