Opunohu Valley
The Opunohu Valley on the island of Moorea is a dramatic volcanic basin surrounded by some of the most iconic peaks in French Polynesia, including Mount Rotui. Known for its lush, emerald-green landscapes, the valley is a treasure trove of ancient Polynesian history, containing numerous restored marae that point to a large pre-European population. The fertile volcanic soil makes it a well-suited center for agriculture, with extensive pineapple plantations and an agricultural college that supports local farming initiatives. For nature enthusiasts, the valley provides a network of hiking trails that lead through dense tropical forests to the famous Belvedere Lookout, providing sweeping views of the valley floor and the twin bays of Opunohu and Cook's. This serene and mystical area features a profound connection to the island's geological origins and its cultural heritage, standing in quiet contrast to the beach resorts.
