Getting there

The dramatic canyon is most commonly reached via a short boat ride from the main bay directly to Hakaui beach. From the shore, a sometimes challenging footpath begins leading deeper into the valley.

Best season

The months strictly between May and October generally offer much more stable weather for the long hike. During the rainy phase, the waterfall roars impressively, but the trails quickly turn into deep, muddy tracks.

Terrain & paths

The path leads through sometimes overgrown terrain, over ancient ruin stones, and frequently requires wading right through shallow stream beds. It leads deep into nature, passing by incredibly steep, moss-covered rock walls.

What to bring

Waterproof or highly quick-drying hiking shoes are strictly mandatory due to the numerous required river crossings. Plenty of water, strong insect repellent, and possibly a walking stick for better balance are strongly advised.

Because the starting point is customarily reached by boat, the issue of parking on-site in the valley itself does not arise. Visitors generally leave their vehicles parked safely back in the main settlement of Taiohae.

Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for this particular hike to find the safest path through the river and ancient ruins. The real risk of falling rocks near the towering, sheer cliffs should never be underestimated.
