💡 Tips

  • The paved road literally ends in Tautira; from here, the wild "Fenua Aihere" can only be explored by boat or on foot.
  • Bring cash with you, as the village is small and card payment facilities are very rare.
  • The black sand beach here is memorable, but be cautious of strong river currents where the Vaitepiha River meets the sea.
  • It's a very traditional and quiet community; dress modestly when walking through the village and respect the relaxed pace.
  • Hire a local boat driver from the village to take you along the rugged, roadless coastline to see dramatic cliffs and waterfalls.

Tautira is a remote and dramatic village situated at the end of the northern road on Tahiti Iti, representing the wild heart of French Polynesia. Framed by emerald-green peaks and deep, mist-shrouded valleys, it provides some of the most dramatic landscapes in the South Pacific. The village holds significant historical weight as the site of a 1774 Spanish expedition led by Domingo de Bonechea, who attempted to colonize the island and establish a mission decades before the French arrival. Later, in 1888, the famed author Robert Louis Stevenson spent several months in Tautira, finding recovery in its serene environment and forming deep bonds with the local people. The Vaitepiha River flows through the village into the ocean, creating an impressive black sand beach that is a local landmark. Beyond the village lies the rugged Pari coast, a roadless wilderness accessible only by boat or on foot, filled with ancient Polynesian temples (marae) and towering sea cliffs, making Tautira the ultimate gateway for eco-tourism and cultural exploration.
