Mount Atiheu

Water temperature…
Mount Atiheu stands as a towering basalt monument overlooking the northern coastline of Nuku Hiva, the largest island in the Marquesas. Its dramatic spires, formed by ancient volcanic activity and refined by millennia of erosion, create a jagged silhouette that often pierces the tropical cloud cover. The peak is inextricably linked to the history of the nearby Atiheu village, a place famously admired by the author Robert Louis Stevenson during his 19th-century travels. Beneath the mountain's gaze lie some of the most extensive archaeological sites in Polynesia, including the Kamuihei complex with its massive stone platforms and ancient banyan trees. For hikers, the ascent provides unparalleled views of the turquoise bay below and the rugged interior of the island. The mountain remains a sacred and symbolic landmark for the local community, representing the enduring strength and geological heritage of the Marquesan landscape.
