Tohua Hikokua (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Tohua Hikokua is a premier archaeological site located in the lush Hatiheu Valley on the island of Nuku Hiva. This ancient Marquesan assembly ground, or "tohua," is one of the most significant and well-restored examples of pre-colonial Polynesian architecture. The site features expansive stone platforms (paepae), ceremonial dance areas, and impressive basalt stone carvings known as Tikis, which represent ancestral deities and guardians. Restored in the late 20th century under the guidance of local leaders, the site has regained its role as an animated center for cultural life. It serves as a primary venue for the Marquesas Arts Festival, where traditional drumming, chanting, and Haka dances are performed in their original setting. The monumental scale of the dry-stone masonry, combined with the backdrop of the jagged volcanic peaks of Hatiheu, creates a profound sense of history. It remains a sacred space for the Marquesan people, symbolizing the endurance of their unique identity and artistic traditions within the French Polynesian archipelago.
