Tourrette-Levens is an exceptional hilltop village located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, serving as a scenic balcony over the Nice metropolitan area. The village is clustered around its 12th-century castle, which remains remarkably intact with its four square towers and curtain walls. Unlike many other Riviera destinations, Tourrette-Levens prides itself on free cultural access, housing three distinct museums that cost nothing to visit. The most famous is the Entomology Museum within the castle walls, showcasing over 70,000 butterfly and insect specimens. The town also hosts a Circus Museum, one of the few of its kind in France, and a Museum of Prehistory and Local History. Historically, it was a vital stronghold on the 'Route du Sel' (Salt Road) connecting the Mediterranean coast to the interior of Savoy. The village's narrow streets, limestone facades, and bustling floral displays embody the classic Provençal aesthetic. Today, it gives a peaceful retreat for commuters from Nice and a starting point for exploring the pre-Alps, including the scenic trails of Mont Macaron and the surrounding evergreen forests.
