Cagnes-sur-Mer is a coastal town on the French Riviera between Nice and Antibes, characterized by three distinct geographical and cultural neighborhoods. The historical core is Haut-de-Cagnes, a medieval village perched on a hill, featuring steep, narrow alleys and crowned by the 14th-century Château Grimaldi. Originally built as a fortress, the castle was later converted into a palatial residence and now houses museums dedicated to modern Mediterranean art and the cultivation of olive trees. Down by the water lies Cros-de-Cagnes, a former fishing village where pebbled beaches, a modest marina, and traditional wooden fishing boats called "pointus" line the promenade. The town's most prominent cultural site is the Musée Renoir, located on the Les Collettes estate. Surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and citrus groves, this house was the final residence of the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir for the last twelve years of his life. The town effectively combines a seaside resort atmosphere with medieval heritage and a direct link to French art history.
