Nice-Nord encompasses the historic Cimiez hill and the expanding residential districts to the north of the city center. In antiquity, Cimiez served as Cemenelum, the capital of the Roman province of Alpes Maritimae, leaving behind impressive ruins of an amphitheater and thermal baths. During the 19th century, the hill became a favored destination for European royalty, leading to the construction of opulent palaces like the Regina, which famously hosted Queen Victoria. The district is home to major cultural institutions, including the Matisse Museum, housed in a 17th-century Genoese villa, and the Marc Chagall National Museum. The landscape is defined by the ancient olive groves of the Cimiez Park, which hosts annual festivals and traditional folk celebrations. Further north, modern residential areas like Saint-Sylvestre are efficiently connected to the Mediterranean coast by tramway line 1. Nice-Nord has a greener, more serene alternative to the bustling tourist center while maintaining deep historical roots and an animated local atmosphere in the hills overlooking the Baie des Anges.
