Perched majestically on a ridge in the Var department, Montauroux is one of the celebrated hilltop villages of the Pays de Fayence. The village provides commanding views over the surrounding forested valleys and the sparkling waters of the nearby Lac de Saint-Cassien, a prime destination for summer kayaking, swimming, and lakeside picnics. Within Montauroux’s historic center, narrow stairways and shaded squares lead past ancient facades, ancient fountains, and the 12th-century Saint-Barthélemy chapel, featuring an interior entirely covered in wooden barrel vaulting. The town gained international glamour as the chosen retreat of fashion designer Christian Dior, who restored the magnificent Château de la Colle Noire in the 1950s, surrounding it with vast fields of fragrant Centifolia roses and jasmine. Today, local agriculture still heavily features perfume flowers alongside olive groves and vineyards. On a Tuesday morning, the central square comes alive with a traditional Provencal market, where vendors sell goat cheese, tapenade, and artisanal honey. It is a well-suited setting for those seeking quiet rural charm seamlessly combined with a touch of elegant history.
