Les Baux-de-Provence is one of the most spectacular fortified settlements in France, situated on a 245-meter-high bare limestone rock. In the Middle Ages, the Lords of Baux ruled the region and its 79 settlements from here, their power secured by a massive castle that was destroyed in 1632 by order of Cardinal Richelieu. The historical center, with only a few permanent residents, is now a veritable open-air museum welcoming over 1.5 million tourists annually. The village's name is also preserved by the red aluminum ore, bauxite, which was discovered here in 1821. On the outskirts of the settlement, an abandoned limestone quarry houses the Carrières de Lumières, which has become world-famous for its immersive art exhibitions featuring massive musical projections onto the quarry walls.
