Avignon, the renowned City of the Popes on the banks of the Rhône, is a global icon of medieval Provencal history and culture. The southern sector, Avignon-Sud, serves as the region's economic engine, featuring extensive industrial zones, major commercial hubs, and the Avignon-Provence airport. This area is bordered by the Durance river, which serves as the boundary with the Bouches-du-Rhône department and plays a key role in regional logistics. Historically, Avignon gained international prominence in the 14th century as the papal residence, a legacy reflected in its monumental architecture, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. While the historic core remains encircled by its medieval ramparts, Avignon-Sud has developed into a modern transport nexus, benefiting from the A7 motorway and the strategic TGV station. The region is also a pivotal center for the fruit and vegetable trade in the Rhône Valley. Current urban planning in the south is focused on revitalizing commercial sectors while preserving the natural riparian environment along the Durance. Every July, the prestigious Avignon Theatre Festival fills the city with visitors from around the world, turning even the modern southern districts into part of a lively cultural landscape.
