💡 Tips
- This is a hiker's island; bicycles are forbidden. Wear sturdy hiking shoes as the trails are steep and rocky.
- Services are extremely limited. Bring ample water and food for the day, as there are no shops or cafes outside the small port.
- Smoking is strictly prohibited except in a small designated area in the port. The fire risk is extremely high.
- There is no ATM on the island. Make sure to bring enough cash, especially for the small grocery store.
🍽 Food
The best way to enjoy the island is to bring a high-quality picnic. Buy fresh bread, cheese, and fruit from a market in Hyères before you take the ferry.
If you prefer to dine out, try one of the few restaurants by the port for fresh, locally caught fish. Be sure to book ahead in summer.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
There is almost no shopping on the island. Buy everything you need-sunscreen, snacks, drinks-on the mainland before you board the ferry.
For a souvenir, visit the boutique at the 'Maison du Parc' in the port. They sell maps, books on the local wildlife, and other small keepsakes.
Bring your snorkel gear and follow the marked underwater trail at La Palud beach. It's a quiet, almost meditative experience watching the fish in their protected habitat.
A 30-minute walk from the port, this beach is far less crowded than most mainland beaches. The water is crystal clear and the setting is completely wild.
For complete solitude, hike this trail along the southern cliffs. It has wide-open views of the open sea and is far from the day-trippers in the port.
Water temperature…
Port-Cros is the smallest and wildest of the three main Hyères Islands (Îles d'Or). In 1963, it became Europe's first marine national park, ensuring its exceptional biodiversity remains untouched. The island is a haven for hikers, with steep trails winding through dense Mediterranean forests of oak and arbutus, leading to rocky coves and historical forts like Fort de l'Estissac. Smoking and cycling are strictly forbidden to protect the fragile ecosystem. One of the island's unique attractions is the underwater snorkeling trail at La Palud beach, where visitors can see a lively array of Mediterranean marine life and seagrass meadows. There are no cars and very few buildings, primarily clustered around the small, pretty harbor. It is a place of absolute tranquility, first-rate for those seeking nature and silence. Ferries depart from Lavandou and Hyères. Due to its status as a sanctuary, visitor numbers are limited.
