Resting at the southeastern foothills of the Alpilles mountain range, Eyguières is a quintessential Provençal village rich in Roman and medieval history. The town is most famous for its abundance of water sources, feeding numerous historical stone fountains scattered across its pleasant squares. Just a few kilometers outside the center, visitors can find the dramatic ruins of the Castellas de Roquemartine, a 12th-century fortress perched on a rocky crag, surrounded by ancient olive groves that produce the highly regarded Vallée des Baux-de-Provence AOC olive oil. Above the village rises the Tour d'Opies, the highest peak in the Alpilles at 498 meters, presenting a rugged but rewarding hike that gives sweeping 360-degree views from the Camargue to the Luberon. The town’s streets feature traditional 18th-century bourgeois houses and the notable Notre-Dame-de-Grâce church. Eyguières lacks the heavy tourist crowds of neighboring Les Baux-de-Provence, offering an authentic agricultural atmosphere where local bull-running traditions (course camarguaise) are still celebrated in the summer months.
