Machecoul is a historic town located in the southern part of the Loire-Atlantique department, serving as the traditional capital of the Pays de Retz. Its history is deeply intertwined with the medieval nobility, most notably the notorious Gilles de Rais, a comrade-in-arms of Joan of Arc who later became one of history's most infamous figures. The ruins of his castle remain a significant landmark in the town today. Geographically, Machecoul sits at the gateway to the Marais Breton marshlands, a vast network of canals and wetlands that stretch toward the Atlantic Ocean. This fertile environment has made the town a powerhouse of French agriculture; it is particularly famous for the large-scale production of lamb's lettuce (mâche), which is exported across Europe. The town's architecture reflects its dual identity as a former military stronghold and a prosperous market town, with highlights including the grand Sainte-Trinité church and the historic Les Halles marketplace. Its proximity to the sea and the regional hub of Nantes makes it a popular residential and tourist destination.
