Baugé, the historical heart of the Baugé-en-Anjou municipality in the Maine-et-Loire department, is a beautifully preserved town offering a deep dive into the rich history of the Anjou region. The town’s skyline is gracefully dominated by the Château de Baugé, a striking 15th-century hunting lodge built by the beloved "Good King René" of Anjou. The castle has been immaculately restored, and its grand halls now house engaging exhibitions transporting visitors back to the daily life, chivalry, and court culture of the late Middle Ages. However, Baugé's most extraordinary treasure is found within the walls of the old Hôtel-Dieu hospital: the 17th-century Apothicairerie de Baugé. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful historical pharmacies in all of France, this room is lined with richly carved oak paneling. The shelves hold a mesmerizing collection of over 600 original faience ceramic jars, intricate wooden boxes, and glass vials that once stored rare herbs, exotic spices, and ancient remedies. Strolling through Baugé’s quiet streets reveals a characterful tapestry of half-timbered houses and elegant tuffeau stone mansions with traditional slate roofs. Surrounded by dense, rolling forests, Baugé perfectly combines deep cultural heritage with tranquil rural beauty.
