Nature outing at Parc des Dosses in Barcarès. A playful discovery of local biodiversity through games and workshops between the lagoon and the sea.
Le Barcarès is a major seaside resort in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, situated at the gateway to French Catalonia. The town was significantly transformed during the 1960s under the Racine Mission, a government project to develop the Languedoc-Roussillon coastline for tourism. Geographically, it occupies a unique position on a narrow strip of land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Salses-Leucate lagoon. Its most iconic landmark is the 'Lydia', a 1930s cruise liner that was intentionally beached in 1967 to serve as a 'ship in the sands' and a cultural center. Today, Le Barcarès is a hub for summer activities, boasting 8km of sandy beaches and a large marina with over 1,000 berths. The town's economy is heavily driven by tourism, reaching its peak during the world-renowned Electrobeach Music Festival. During the winter months, it hosts the 'Village de Noël', one of the most elaborate Christmas markets in Southern Europe. The lagoon area remains ecologically vital, supporting traditional fishing and providing a premier destination for wind and water sports enthusiasts.
