Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a captivating fishing town on the Basque coast that seamlessly blends its rich maritime heritage with authentic local traditions and royal history. In 1660, the French Sun King, Louis XIV, married Maria Theresa of Spain in the magnificent Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, which still features an awe-inspiring wooden altarpiece. The town's main sandy beach, the Grande Plage, is naturally protected from the fierce Atlantic waves by massive seawalls in the bay, making it a great and safe swimming spot for families. As you wander through the pedestrianized streets, you will be charmed by the traditional Basque half-timbered houses painted in spirited reds and greens. The fishing port remains highly active today, with local fishermen bringing in daily fresh catches of tuna and sardines that are expertly prepared in the waterfront restaurants. Be sure to stop by Maison Adam to taste their famous macarons, baked using a closely guarded family recipe that dates back to the royal wedding in the 17th century. The unique combination of coastal beauty, culinary excellence, and history makes it a standout destination.
