Ciboure, known as Ziburu in Basque, is a welcoming coastal town in the French Basque Country, separated from Saint-Jean-de-Luz by the mouth of the Nivelle river. The town has a long and proud maritime history, having been a home to corsairs, whale hunters, and skilled fishermen for centuries. One of its most famous sons is the composer Maurice Ravel, whose birthplace overlooking the harbor is a fine example of 17th-century architecture. Walking through the streets of Ciboure, visitors are greeted by traditional Basque houses with their characteristic timber frames in deep red or blue. The Saint-Vincent church is a must-see, featuring a unique interior with wooden galleries and an ex-voto in the form of a ship hanging from the ceiling, symbolizing the town's connection to the sea. At the edge of the bay stands the imposing Socoa Fortress, which has guarded the entrance to the port since the time of Louis XIII. Today, Ciboure provides an excellent blend of beach relaxation, cultural discovery, and high-end Basque cuisine. The town is also a gateway to the remarkable Basque mountains and the scenic coastal path that stretches toward the Spanish border. Its animated markets and traditional festivals ensure that the Basque language and customs remain a vital part of everyday life.
