Ludon-Médoc is located in the Gironde department north of Bordeaux and is an essential stop in the prestigious Haut-Médoc wine region. The commune stretches between the Garonne estuary and the first gravelly ridges that provide good conditions for viticulture. Historically, the town was shaped by the draining of the marshes in the 17th century by Dutch engineers, which made large-scale vine cultivation possible. The flagship of the commune is Château La Lagune, a 1855 classified Troisième Cru, whose manor house is a prime example of classic Bordeaux architecture. In addition to wine-growing, the crafts surrounding winemaking, particularly cooperage (barrel making), play a major economic role. The landscape is characterized by the 'palus', fertile alluvial soils by the river, and the gentle slopes of the vineyards. The neo-Gothic Saint-Martin church forms the center of the town, which has preserved its village charm despite its proximity to the metropolis of Bordeaux.
