Rochefort, a 17th-century planned city in the Charente-Maritime department, was founded at the behest of Jean-Baptiste Colbert as the premier military port and arsenal for King Louis XIV. The heart of the city is the Corderie Royale, a rope factory over 370 meters long that was a technological masterpiece of its time. For centuries, Rochefort was the center of French shipbuilding, where numerous warships were constructed for the Navy. A modern highlight is the faithful reconstruction of the frigate Hermione, which General La Fayette sailed to America in 1780. The city is characterized by its wide, grid-patterned streets and the Neoclassical architecture of its buildings. Another technical monument is the Transporter Bridge of 1900, the last of its kind in France. Today, Rochefort is not only a place of rich military and maritime history but also a thermal spa and a significant cultural hub on the Atlantic coast.
