Loudun is a historic town in the Vienne department, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the surrounding countryside. Its strategic position at the crossroads of Anjou, Touraine, and Poitou made it a major stronghold throughout the Middle Ages. The town is dominated by the 'Tour Carrée', a magnificent 12th-century square keep that is one of the few remaining structures of the vast fortress dismantled on Cardinal Richelieu's orders. Loudun is internationally known for the 17th-century affair of the 'Possessed of Loudun' and the subsequent trial of Urbain Grandier, a landmark event in the history of religious and legal persecution. Beyond its dramatic history, Loudun is a peaceful agricultural center, particularly famous for its vineyards and the production of melon-de-bourgogne and other regional grapes. It is also the birthplace of Théophraste Renaudot, a physician and philanthropist considered the father of French journalism. The medieval streets are lined with beautiful Renaissance mansions and historic religious sites, including the church of Saint-Pierre-du-Marché with its impressive spire. Today, Loudun successfully blends its rich historical narrative with a focus on wine tourism and cultural preservation.
