La Réole is a captivating town in the Gironde department, perched on a limestone cliff overlooking the Garonne river. Its name is derived from the Latin 'Regula', referring to the Benedictine monastery established here in 977. As a designated 'City of Art and History', La Réole possesses a wealth of architectural treasures, most notably the Old Town Hall (Ancien Hôtel de Ville), built in the late 12th century under the patronage of Richard the Lionheart, making it one of the oldest municipal buildings in France. The town's urban fabric is characterized by steep, narrow streets and timber-framed houses that lead to the imposing Château des Quat'Sos, a 13th-century fortress that once guarded the river crossing. The Saint-Pierre priory, with its magnificent 18th-century wrought-iron balconies by Blaise Charlut, adds a touch of elegance to the rugged medieval landscape. Today, La Réole is a cultural hub for the Entre-deux-Mers region, hosting major events like the festival of early music, while its economy remains tied to the surrounding vineyards and river-based tourism.
